Affordable Lawn Mowers Buying Guide

Funny enough lawn mowers can range from $50 to a $1000 or more. But there are so many different factors in those price points. From the size and type of motor in the lawnmower, and the cutting path (usually shown in inches ) to the attachments that can come with them, and general design of the lawnmower.

There are plenty of add ons, like snow chains, different blades, do it your self-maintenance kits, and plenty of other things to consider.

Selecting the right Lawn Mowers

When we went looking at lawnmowers we based our decision on a couple of factors :

* Budget
* The size of the area you have to maintain
* Preference in fuel – Battery v’s petrol or manual ( yes that’s a thing)
* Where and how you will be using it

No doubt buying a cheap lawn mower for the sake of it can just be throwing your money away at times. Yes, there is truth in the statement that you get what you pay for. So, we advise being realistic and consider value for money as it goes hand in hand with your needs.

In these reviews, we are specifically looking at lawnmowers, but you, of course, can different lawn maintenance garden tools, like whipper snippers, blowers, hedge trimmers.

Every tool has a place and use, make sure you’re buying the right tool for the job at hand.

Getting the right affordable lawn mowers that will suit you, takes some considered thought, making sure you also consider the type of fuel you want to be using. Once you get the best affordable lawn mower for the money you spend, you will have the right tool to help you maintain your back yard.

Don’t forget, you can always add to your garden tools as you go. You don’t need to spend all your money right now. Most brands also offer attachments, and other assorted tools no matter what the size of your lawn or what you need to do to maintain it either.

Specifications to look for in Lawn Mowers

When we evaluate a product, we take in to account the following values for our top picks. Which are:

* Size/dimensions: Being physical size and the cutting path
* Type of fuel: Gas, Battery, Electric or manual.
* Price: This is important to consider, we need to make sure its fits into our budget.
* Lawn Area: This is the size of your yard, if you cutting 4 acres, you probably want to stay away from a manual lawnmower.

Electric V’s gas – Affordable Lawn Mowers

Obviously, there are gas-powered and electric powered lawn mowers out there as well. With technology advancements being the way it is, battery-powered products have come a long way, and definitely should be considered.

There are obvious benefits to battery or electric which is that it is clearly better for the environment

Depending on the type of environment that you are using it in, you might find that your battery might not last as long as a gas-powered engine.

Gas-powered engines are generally more powerful and can give you a better cut, but the units can weigh more.

Don’t forget you need to store gas safely as well. The great thing with battery-electric is that you can usually just plug it into a charger and walk away.

A few things to consider about buying affordable lawn mowers

Not everyone enjoys mowing a lawn. So having the right lawnmower that will get the job done quickly can make it a lot easier. You can also look at the time mowing your lawn as exercise as well.

You are going to spend your hard-earned money, so make sure you get what you want and need for your back yard.

Lawnmowers are tools, and like all tools, they need to be maintained. The better maintained means the longer they will last, so don’t forget to factor that into your yard maintenance budget.

Affordable Lawn Mowers Review

American Lawn Mower 1204 – 14 inch

Backyard Rating – 2.5 / 5

The American Lawn Mower 1204 – 14 inches is the first one we tested. It’s a manual 4 blade push reel Lawn Mower. Sized at 14 inches, there is a couple of other option as well 14 inches with 5 blades and a 16 inch 5 blade model.

There are a tempered alloy steel reel and bed knife blade. It has a pretty smooth spinning blade, easy-roll wheels, and height adjust-ability. There are 8.5-inch diameter polymer wheels. The cutting height can vary from 1/2 – 1 3.4 inches.

It’s extremely lightweight at 19 pounds. There are a few attachments that you can get for it as well, such as a reel mower sharpening kit and a mower grass catcher.

The good thing with the American Lawn Mower 1204 – 14 inches is that it really is a sturdy well-made mower. The bad thing is it’s manual. Now don’t get us wrong we are all for exercise.

Price-wise it’s a no-brainer, it’s on the lower end of the scale.

The Wash-UP

A manual push mower works the best when you have a flat lawn and something that is not very big. You don’t want to be pushing a mower around 10 acres of grass. Or maybe you do, but we certainly don’t.

At the very cheap end of affordable lawnmowers, it ticks the budget and environment boxes.

Things We Liked

  • Sturdy design
  • priced really well
  • The overall size of the unit
  • Great for the environment

Things we didn’t

  • It’s manual. Who wants to walk pushing a manual lawnmower. We prefer power, and well we might be a touch lazy as well.
  • At 14 inch, it’s a small cutting width

Troy-Bilt TB330 163CC 21-inch rear-wheel drive

Backyard rating – 3.5 / 5

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B00WFC2K1I” locale=”US” src=”https://livingouttheback.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/413ZSQNwpCL.SL160.jpg” tag=”livingouttheback-20″ width=”156″]The Troy-Bilt TB330 163CC 21-inch rear wheel drive, is the first of the powered units that we took for a spin. A standard 163cc Briggs & Stratton engine powers this Troy-Bilt TB330 163CC 21-inch rear wheel drive.

The thing we really liked with this particular lawnmower was the 21-inch cutting path. It has a very sturdy deck and chassis as well with a nicely designed safety handle and a single lever to control the variable speed drive unit.

It is standard with a catcher as well, with 8-inch wheels. The handle is adjustable as well so you can find just the right comfort for you when you are operating the Troy-Bilt TB330 163CC 21-inch rear-wheel drive

The single greatest thing we loved about this it is rear-wheel drive and self-propelled.

Now that doesn’t mean it will mow the lawn for you, but once the handle is engaged it will self propel, which is a nice feature.

The Wash Up

Nice unit, the self-propelled rear-wheel drive was a great feature we thought. The 8-inch wheels give plenty of adjustable height its not a bad price for what it is. But there would be better value out there.

Things We Liked

  • Self Propelled
  • 8-inch wheels
  • Sturdy design
  • 21-inch cutting path

The thing we didn’t like

  • Little pricey
  • Small engines – need maintenance

EGO Power + 20 inch 56 Volt Cordless Lawn Mower

Backyard Rating – 4 / 5

We need to say this upfront this was by far the most expensive lawnmower that we looked at. But we loved the EGO Power + 20 inch 56 Volt Cordless Lawn Mower coming in at $625.81. Battery technology has come a long way, the great thing about Lithium-ion batteries is the ability to rapidly charge with a 30 minute charge time.

With the rapid charge, it gives you a 45 minute cut time. Which should be plenty of time to cut most residential-sized lawns. It’s got a sizeable 4.0 Ah 56V battery.

The other thing we found with this EGO Power + 20 inch 56 Volt Cordless Lawn Mower, is that you can fold it up, so it’s compact and you can store it upright if you want.

We have to point out that it has a slightly smaller cutting path with only a 20-inch cut capacity, but the fact that it is better for the environment, without the noise, mess, and fumes, and it’s made to durable in most weather conditions.

The Wash Up

Without a doubt it’s a quality product, yes it’s a bit more expensive than some other Battery electric lawn mowers on the market but it is value for money. There are other EGO Power products on the market, we’d have no issue with adding them to the lawn tools.

We do think as is normal with technology, as it progresses and improves it will become cheaper, so the price is up there at the moment, but we still consider this unit in the affordable lawn mowers group.

Things We Liked

  • The quality build
  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Rapid charge battery

Things We Didn’t

  • A little pricey
  • the slightly smaller cutting path at 20 inches.

Powersmart DB85215 – Gas Self Propelled Mower

Backyard Rating – 3 / 5

The Powersmart DB85215 – Gas Self Propelled Mower, was next on the agenda, going back to a Gas powered model as a little deflating. But it certainly was more budget-friendly at $199, but it’s the noise and mess that comes with a gas-powered model that is a little annoying though.

We are back to a 21-inch cutting path, and this model is also self-propelled, with a pull start.

It comes with a 5 position height adjustment, so you can change the height to suit the time of year you are cutting your lawn and the height that it is at. A standard 8-inch rear wheel is fitted on the back.

With a 159 CC overhead value engine (It’s slightly smaller than the Troy-Bilt model above). but it doesn’t require choking or priming to start, so you just pull and go, another thing to consider is that the oil is separate, so you will have to buy oil for it.

It has a pretty standard two-year warranty, as well.

The Wash Up

A nice well made affordable lawnmower, probably better suited to a smaller yard though. But overall its value for money, a little bit of a downstep from the EGO power, but it will get the job done.

Things We Liked

  • Priced well
  • Self Propelled

Things We Didn’t

  • Slightly smaller catcher
  • Gas-powered – We really enjoyed the EGO Power model.

Sun Joe MJ40TE 14 Inch Electric Lawnmower

Backyard Rating 2.5 / 5

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B0029TLUOA” locale=”US” src=”https://livingouttheback.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41vAiKXuFL.SL160.jpg” tag=”livingouttheback-20″ width=”160″]The Sun Joe MJ40TE 14 Inch Electric Lawnmower is back to the electric models. And while it certainly isn’t it the same class as the EGO Power, it’s certainly ok. It’s fitted with 12 amp electric motor, with an extension cord length of 100 feet.

Yes, you read that right an extension cord, so it will only suit small yards. As it has a 14-inch cutting path, and the extension cord certainly limits what it can do.

It only has 3 position height adjustments up to 2-2.5 inches, with 5.5 real wheels.

It does only have a small fragile catcher bag as well.

The Wash Up

Make no mistake this unit is suited for small yards only. It’s limited by the cutting path and the extension cord. With the small catcher bag, you will be emptying it regularly. It will suit the budget-conscious as well.

Things We Liked

  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Very well priced

Things We Didn’t

  • The Extension cord is a pain
  • The Small Catcher

$69.99 [easyazon_cta align=”center” identifier=”B0029TLUOA” key=”small-orange” locale=”US” tag=”livingouttheback-20″]

There you go our reviews on 5 affordable lawnmowers. We tried to do review something that suits everyone, from manual, Gas powered to electric, both battery and extension cord. As with anything make sure you set you budget and stick to it.

The great thing about a well-maintained lawn is its a great place to use your affordable charcoal grill for entertaining.

Hi, thanks for those reviews. I’ve been looking at another lawnmower for a while now. I’ve had a electric cord mower in the past not the Sun Joe model, but another brand. And they were a massive pain in the arse…

  2. juice says:

hey… I actually have that exact model of the EGO power.. had it for a while now. its an awesome lawn mower.. maybe a little expensive.. but well worth the money..

  3. Glenn Bohannon says:

If you want a machine that will last for many years, look for a model with a steel cutting deck, rather than a plastic one. While the plastic decks are more resilient that you might think, steel will always out-last them. Another thing to look for is a built in tank if you want a durable mower.
