BBQ Sausage and PearA simple sausage can be improved with a bit of ingenuity. By adding different flavours a sausage will take you on a whole new culinary journey. A sausage won’t be just a sausage! try this BBQ Sausage and pear next time you are entertaining friends and family in your backyard.

BBQ Sausage and Pear

What you need to create a masterpiece.  A nice pear with a fat sausage.


  • 2 medium red onions cut into wedges (340g)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 3 medium pears (690g) cut into wedges
  • ¼ cup (60mls) apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 thick pork sausages (1 Kg)
  • 1 cup (120g) toasted pecans
  • 2 witlof (250g), trimmed, quartered – (If you don’t know what they try looking near the lettuce at the fruit and veg shop)


Cook the onion on the heated oiled flat plate until softened. Add caraway seeds and pears, cook about 5 minutes or until the pear is browned lightly. Combine pear mixture in a medium bowl with vinegar and oil.

In the meantime cook the sausage on a heated oiled grill plate until cooked through.

Place nuts and witlof in the bowl with pear mixture, toss gently and serve with sausages.

This recipe will take around 15 minutes to prepare and cooks in 15 minutes. It will feed 4 people.

To complement the meal try serving it with a nice bottle of Viognier.  Viognier is the white wine for red drinkers and this one has voluptuous stone fruit and pear flavours that will work beautifully with this dish.
