0
best watering systems

If you have a big backyard and garden.  Watering by hand can be a hassle and very time consuming. You have to drag hoses around, move sprinklers or take the time to water each plant.  Adding the best watering system for your yard, can help manage maintaining your yard.

Have you thought about installing a watering system for your garden in the back yard? It can save you money in the long term and of course allows you to spend your time elsewhere, like on a relaxing holiday.

What does it do?

The best watering system allows the water to penetrate directly into the root of the grass and plants. This methods eliminates water dribbling over the actual plants.

If you have a rainwater tank in your yard then attaching a watering system to it will be excellent for the plants.  It will be more natural than town supply which has chemicals in it.

adding a watering system

Drip Lines

Many people believe that drip lines are the way to water the garden. These are set up by running some polyline from the faucet through the garden.

Adding drip feeders along the way near each plant. Add a timer to it to set the watering time to a suitable time of the day.

Just be sure not to set it for when it’s the hottest time of the day. It’s a useless exercise to water in the heat of the day.

Benefits of Drip irrigation

The use of drip irrigation is an excellent way to:

  • Save water
  • Keep the moisture off the foliage
  • Helps to control weds
  • It will save you time
  • Better watering technique

Saving water

Is paramount for any gardener. The majority of the water is actually directed to your plants. Using sprinklers tends to waste a lot of the water.

Because quite a lot of it is lost to evaporation and wind and tends to run off in a different direction to where it was meant to go.

Keeping the moisture off the foliage is important as many plants are more susceptible to certain pests and diseases when their foliage is wet, as happens when a sprinkler or hand hose is used.

Tomato plants are one that tends to succumb to blight if their leaves are wet. The moisture helps the blight spores thrive and spread.

Controlling the weeds

Will be helped by using drip irrigation. When the soaker hoses are in use they are only watering right along each row of plants and the weeds that are trying to grow will suffer through lack of water.

Also the use of mulch around the plants will also help control the weeds.

It will save you time

If you have installed drip irrigation as it is as simple as turning on the water in a central location that has a timer attached. Automatic timers are able to be installed to make it a lot easier.

Better watering techniques

Are established with drip irrigation. By using a sprinkler the water tends to form a crust around the plant.

Then as more water is applied it will most likely run off rather than seep down to where it is needed.

There is a fair amount of technology on the market to assist in installing the right system for your backyard. Sensors can be installed to read just when your garden requires watering, then they will start the system to water where it is needed.

With the climatic changes, drought has been in the news lately so the more we can conserve the precious commodity that we have the longer we will have it.

There are a lot of different watering systems on the market.  To get the best watering system for your backyard, research is the key.

Using a Charcoal Grill

using a charcoal grill

So you have decided that you want to start barbecuing, in your backyard.  What more, you have done your research and decided that using a charcoal grill is the right type of grill for you.

Now the question is.  What type of charcoal grill suits you best.

Size of the Charcoal Grill

One of the first things to consider when purchasing your first charcoal grill is what you will be using it for.

If you plan on traveling and using your charcoal grill, you will want something small enough to travel with you.

Smaller charcoal grills are ideal for cookouts, camping, and tail gate parties, but would not be useful if you were cooking for a larger amount of people.

Smaller grills that are easy to transport usually cost under $10 dollars, so you may want to consider purchasing a separate grill for smaller occasions.

Grill safety first

Safety should also be a major concern when you are picking out your first charcoal grill.

Since you grill will contain hot coals, the number one concern should be whether or not your grill is sturdy.

Look for a charcoal grill with a sturdy structure and sturdy legs. If you grill does now have sturdy legs, it s chances of falling over is much greater.

When a charcoal grill falls over, it send hot coals flying. Many charcoal grills also have built in safety features such as a water reservoir and smothering valves.

Undoubtedly, when you are cooking with fire, accidents can happen.

In the case that your grill gets out of control or becomes to hot, these safety features will prevent potentially dangerous fires.

affordable charcoal grills

Flavor matters on the grill

One of the most noticeable features when using charcoal is the flavor of the food you cook.

To cook with a charcoal grill, you must buy charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid.

Charcoal is a one use item, and will need to be discarded after each use.

Charcoal can be picked up at your local superstore, gas station, or grocery store, and is typically pretty inexpensive.

Charcoal must be light and allowed to burn until the charcoal is no longer on fire, but is red embers.

The best way to get the pile to burn is by stacking it in a pyramid.  Using a chimney is one of the smartest ways to start using a charcoal grill.

Grill cleaning basics

While no one likes to clean their grill.  But it is necessary to maintain your grill if you want it to last it s intended lifetime.

One problem you will face is the fact that Charcoal grills stay hot for a long period of time. You can remedy this situation 2 ways.

First you can leave your grill open, allowing it to burn out. This method typically burns a lot of the grease off.

This method can potentially cause problems if you are not near your barbeque grill. You do not want to start a fire.

Another way is to completely close off your grill and deny the fire oxygen. As soon as the grill is cold, or cold enough not to burn you.

You will want to clean the grill. Leaving the grill dirty for any amount of time will cause the buildup to become hard.  Which will make it harder to remove. Use a wire brush to clean off the surface areas of your grill, and then spray cooking oil on the surface.

Take the racks off and clean them with dish washing soap. Dawn or other brands that have de-greasers work best.

Rinse the racks off, and replace them in the grill.

We are massive fans of using a Charcoal grill for a barbecue. We still use a Gas bbq as well.  Here is a fantastic Weber Ultimate Grilling recipe book available from Amazon.

Long term planning for your backyard lifestyle

I have grown to love my backyard so much because it holds so much potential for me and my family.

It is a small plot of the earth just to be used by me and the ones I love.

Because I know that not many people in the world have a space to call their own, I have really learned to make the most of the backyard I have.

For the first few years our small family had a backyard we did little with it other than mow the grass. T

hat all changed, however, after a family meeting we held one Saturday afternoon. I guess it was my husband’s idea, I cannot really remember, but I just know that we decided as a family to put our backyard into good use.

We brainstormed ideas about the different ways that we could transform our backyard into a place that we all enjoyed spending time in.

Our brainstorming session led to many changes in our backyard. My husband and I had always wanted to garden, so we set aside part of the backyard and began making preparations for having a vegetable garden.

It was a thrill for us to actually see one of dreams come true right on our own property. We read up on gardening and asked for tips from our gardening friends.

Within two seasons we had a small but successful vegetable garden that was one of the proudest spots in our backyard.

Adding a fire pit

Our children requested a fire pit so that we could enjoy bonfires and making smores on cool summer nights.

We did a little research and installed a great fire pit on one side of our backyard. It became a gathering place for many of our friends and family all year long.

Many special conversations were had around that fire pit.  It fast became one of the best parts of our backyard.

Regardless of the state of your backyard now.  Take some time to brainstorm with your own family.  Your will find a way to enjoy your backyard for years to come.

Gas grills work by a spark igniting the gas within the grill. Gas grills typically have a knob or button in which you push, which in turn activates a small hammer.

How To Plan a Backyard bar and grill

0
backyard bar and grill

One of the best things about having a house during the summertime is that you can have backyard barbecues — if you have a backyard bar and grill set up.

There are a lot of ways that you can set up a backyard bar and grill, and the way that you set one up will depend on the style of your house and the size of your backyard.

When you are designing your backyard bar and grill, you’ll need to make some decisions about:

  • The type of grill that you want
  • The type of bar that you want
  • What kind of patio design you have
  • What kinds of improvements you’re willing to make to your current patio design.

If you’re looking to make the best backyard bar and grill for your home, here are several tips that you can use to help you make decisions.

Style of House

The type of backyard bar and grill that you have will be largely influenced by the type of house that you have.

If you have a two-story home that opens onto a deck in the back, you’ll have different challenges than if you have a home that opens directly onto the backyard patio from the ground floor.

If your patio opens directly off of the ground floor, you can simply design your backyard bar and grill there, but if you have a deck that is off the ground, you have a couple of choices to make.

planning a backyard grill

Backyard Bar and Grill With a Deck

People usually want to be able to access the backyard bar and grill from a nearby door. If your deck doesn’t already have stairs that lead to the yard, you could build stairs and make a patio on ground level.

Otherwise, you can work with the deck space that you have, or you could expand. Consider if you plan on having large gatherings for your barbecues or if you just want the space for you and your immediate family.

Do you want guests to have access to the entire area of your yard? If you want them to be able to access the entire yard because your deck is too small, you’ll need to build stairs if you don’t already have them.

You could design the space so that traffic flow is spread out over the lawn and the deck, and there are many other designs that you can consider.

Take some time and plan traffic flow and where each of the activities will be located.

Size of Backyard

The size of your backyard will also play a role in how your backyard bar and grill is laid out. If you have a very large backyard, you’ll want to define spaces, but you have a lot to work with.

If you have a very small backyard, you have a bigger challenge, and you’ll have to spend more time planning how to fit everything you want into the space that you have.

For instance, if you have the deck off of the second floor, but your yard is small, you can create a deck that has multiple levels to make the best use of the space that you have.

This is especially useful if you enjoy hosting large parties. If you have a patio that is on ground level.  You’ll need to be economical about how you position the dining area, cooking area, fire pit, and anything else you think you might want to add.

Patio Design

When you’re designing your patio for your backyard bar and grill, there are two main considerations you’ll need to make.

First of all, you’ll need to choose a material. Secondly, you’ll need to lay out the exact placement of the patio.

There are many types of materials that you can use some of these include:

  • Flagstone: Great for creating natural, organic look
  • Stained or Stamped Concrete: Low maintenance and looks great for years
  • Brick: Works well when creating a more formal look
  • Gravel: Easy to install and has a low-key look

Design Consideration

When you’re laying out the design of your patio, you’ll want to consider both aesthetics and functionality.

For instance, if your yard has hills, do you want stairs that lead to a lower section? You’ll also want to plan where your backyard bar and grill will be.

Do you want the backyard patio to have a formal appearance or something that is a little more laid back? Or do you want paths that lead to a garden?

Do you want a table made of the same concrete that your patio is made with? How about the bar?

There are many choices that you can make to increase the functionality of your backyard bar and grill.

So take some time to plan out exactly what features you want, where they will go, and what materials you will use to create them.

BBQ Grill Type

When you’re planning your backyard bar and grill, you’ll need to decide what kind of bbq grill type you would like.

One of the most basic considerations that you will need to make is if you want a gas or charcoal bbq grill for your backyard bar and grill.

When choosing a bbq grill, there isn’t a right or wrong answer; it’s merely a matter of preference. Some people like the convenience of a gas grill.

All you have to do is light it, wait a couple of minutes, and then it’s ready to go. Other people prefer charcoal grills because they create a unique, smoky flavor that gas grills just can’t mimic.

You’ll also want to consider the size of the bbq grill for your backyard bar and grill. You have to be realistic about how much room you have to dedicate to the grill.

You’ll also need to know how much cooking space you’ll need if you plan on hosting large parties.

backyard bar

Type of Bar

Bars are great additions when you are doing backyard planning. They serve as a fun and functional design element that can enhance your backyard parties.

People can watch you cook while you chat, so the bar serves as a cooking space and an eating space.

There are many different kinds of bars that you can consider adding to your backyard bar and grill.

For instance, do you want your bar to be solely for food preparation? Do you want to be set up to make drinks?

The type of bar that you build for your backyard bar and grill will be dependent on your answer to these questions.

Whenever you are doing backyard planning, you want to think about the types of activities that you will want to accommodate.

For your backyard planning, here are a couple of things that you will want to consider for your bar.

Food and Entertaining Bar Only

If you’re planning on making a bar that will be solely for preparing food and entertaining guests, it will be set up a little differently.

Regardless of which kind of bar you choose for your backyard bar and grill area, you’ll want to decide how long you want your bar to be.

Not only will this determine how much space you have to work with, but it will also determine how many people you can have seated at the bar.

If you choose to have a bar that you will prepare food at, think about where you will store utensils, plates, and other supplies.

Do you want a built-in cutting board? How about overhead lighting for after the sun sets?

Drinks Bar

When you’re doing backyard planning.  You need to decide that it would be nice to be able to offer your guests mixed drinks.

If you decide to put a bar where you can make drinks for your guests, there are a few additional features that you should consider.

Many cocktails call for juices and condiments. If you want to be able to serve specialty cocktails from your backyard bar and grill without having to go inside for the condiments, you’ll need to have a place to keep things chilled.

You can either have a mini fridge, or you’ll need to find a place to keep things on ice in your backyard bar and grill. You can have an ice bar built into the space.

Additional Features

There are some nice extra features that you can add to your backyard bar and grill area. For instance, if you are adding a bar, you can make it a wet bar.

The benefit of this is that it allows you to have everything you need for your backyard bar and grill within easy reach.

The drawback is that you will need to run plumbing to the backyard bar and grill area. Another extra feature to consider when you are doing backyard planning is adding a mini fridge to your backyard bar and grill.

It’s very convenient to have a fridge for storing items like condiments so they are within easy reach whenever you entertain in your backyard bar and grill.

If it’s time to give your backyard some TLC.  You can throw some parties or enjoy some time in the back with your close family.  Feel free to dream, but put in enough planning. Designing the backyard bar and grill of your dreams takes time.

There’s a lot of work that goes into building a backyard barbecue and entertaining area.  You’ll be happier with the end result if you put the time into planning.
